Dear offensive coaching staff,
With athletes such as Terrelle Pryor and Chris Wells, why are we so conservative with our play calling? Let’s face it; Ohio State could be running up the score like Florida or Oklahoma do on a daily basis (winning by 40 points against the not-so-competitive teams), but we don’t.
“We studied the film and were extremely comfortable with our game plan. We feel as if we knew what they were going to do on every play.” -Pete Carroll, post-game interview vs. Ohio State.
Ohio State continues to start fast, get off to a 10-point lead or so, then simply die. TP would be putting up 3-4 total touchdowns per game with a less conservative offense. Look at Urban Meyer per se, he uses his athletes to the fullest. Florida scores often and a lot. Ohio State, on the other hand, runs the ball on first down, runs on second down, then throws the ball on third down, if its not a short gain situation.
O.k., we win our games (most of the time) but not in the prettiest fashion. Seriously, 16-3 vs. Purdue in a game that should have been 41-3. Let him throw the ball Jim! Let them run some crazy plays that scores touchdowns. Then maybe we wont have to trust our inconsistant defense as much. Yes, the defense played great, but we, the fans in the crowd, do not feel comfortable with 10-15 point leads anymore. Score points.
Can we seriously say that Penn State is worlds above us offensively? The continue to destroy teams that we also play, manhandling both Purdue and Wisconsin away from Happy Valley. I know that when PSU comes into Columbus it will be an entirely different game but there are certain things you don’t see.
If Ohio State wants to be in a BCS game, we have to put up big numbers and show the media that we are a good team. The media does not watch our game individually. They see the final scores. So, when Texas beats Schlubsville St. (Baylor, etc.) 65-7, it matters. They see that Texas is an elite team. A 16-3 win over lowely Purdue, where our offense struggled to throw for 100 yards, shows the media that we do not belong at the top. That’s why we are stuck at #12 in the polls.
Of course, in 2002 OSU barely won games and were deemed “The Luckeyes.” However, the Buckeyes took care of business and failed to lose a game. This year, we were embarrassed in L.A. and any respect we had left terribly needed to be earned back; if it’s possible. We have no respect.
Concluding my rant, Tressel needs to call some plays that benefit the one-of-a-kind duo we have in our offensive backfield. This offense is capable of putting up big numbers and has yet to show it due to insufficient play-calling. Let Terrelle pass the ball, let the defense make mistakes, do not be the most predictable coach in the NCAA. You no longer have to be.
Referring to the Pete Carroll quote at the top. It’s not the first time a coach felt that way playing OSU. Our athletes can only keep us in the games for so long, Jim.
