While 24 spots filled up quickly for the Ohio State 2009 recruiting class, many prospects were left in lingo on whether there would be room for them in the class. With some of those players committing to other schools recently, the picture has become a little bit more clear for who will fill out OSU’s class that is expected to total around 26-28 players. In this column, we look at players who were on the Buckeye Radar to fill out the class, but committed elsewhere, as well as the players who can still fill out the class.
Brandon McGee- This morning McGee (above-right) pledged his services to the University of Miami (FL). The Sunshine State product was high on OSU after the spring game, but with 6 defensive backs already in this class, it was tough for McGee to make the call to Columbus. Randy Shannon picks up a big commitment here.
Tyrone Ezell- The big defensive tackle from Pennsylvania was down to OSU and Pitt for a while now, and finally chose the Panthers. With Adam Bellamy, John Simon, Melvin Fellows, and Jonathan Newsome in the fold, it was a long shot that Ezell would choose the Buckeyes.
EJ Banks- The cousin of Joey Galloway was thought to be an OSU lean for a while, but like McGee, the secondary seemed to be a tad bit too crowded in this class. Banks recently gave his verbal commitment to Charlie Weis and Notre Dame. It’s a shame there was no room for EJ in this class, as he is another elite talent from Western Pennsylvania.
Pat Muldoon- While Muldoon has not committed anywhere yet, the St. Xavier star DE has narrowed his college choices down to Boston College, Virginia, Cincinnati, and Wisconsin. Muldoon found himself in a similar situation to Ezell’s and figured it was best to move on from his OSU roots.
What’s Left- When looking at the rest of the players to fill out the class there are a handful of names that come to mind. The top two targets for the Bucks are Glenville OT Marcus Hall and Miami Palmetto RB Jaamal Berry. Hall says OSU, Michigan, and LSU are in his top three, while Berry favors the Buckeyes over Florida and says there is a 90% chance he will commit to OSU. Another prospect the Bucks would love to land, is Scottsdale (AZ) Saguaro DT Corey Adams, who has OSU in his top three, along with USC and Arizona State. Miami Gulliver Prep LB Frankie Telfort and Salt Lake City Cottonwood OL John Martinez are dark horses for this class, but could prove to be nice additions if room permits. McGee’s teammate at Plantation (Miami, FL), safety Vlad Emilien, is also a dark horse to end up in this class due to the amount of room in the secondary, after initially favoring the Bucks early in the process. Tight ends Dion Sims (St. Mary’s-Orchard Lake, MI) and Ra’Shede Hageman (Washburn-Minneapolis, MN) are also possibilities for this class, and only time will tell if the Bucks can land one of the two. Last, but not least, a very interesting scenario for OSU could be Houston St. Pius X kicker Anthony Fera. Fera has had OSU, Penn State, and Michigan in his top three for a while, and has grown up a Buckeye fan. A recent offer from PSU has put the Nittany Lions in the lead for his services, while OSU has only offered Fera a gray-shirt offer. If that gray-shirt offer becomes a full scholarship offer, Fera could very well find himself in Columbus for the next 4-5 years.
The madness of the 2009 recruiting year has certainly taken another turn, and as always it will be interesting, and definitely not predictable, on how things will play out. Stay tuned as DTI will continue to bring you news on how the final 2-4 spots of OSU’s 2009 class will fill out.
