Tonight at 9 PM on ESPN in a primetime battle the Ohio State Buckeyes (17-5, 7-4) take on the Wisconsin Badgers (15-9, 6-6) up in Madison, Wisconsin. The game is significant to both teams as the Buckeyes are trying to get back to second place in the Big Ten while the Badgers are hanging onto their last chances of earning an NCAA Tournament bid. Wisconsin comes into the game winners of their last three including a 63-50 win over the previously ranked Illinois Fighting Illini. Meanwhile, Ohio State comes off a week where they took down two ranked opponents at Value City Arena against Purdue and Minnesota. Ohio State has lost their last six games at Kohl Arena in Madison, with their last win coming on Jan. 13, 2000.Both teams come into the game with three players averaging double figures. For the Badgers it’s Marcus Landry at 12.8 PPG, Trevon Hughes with 11.6 PPG, and Jason Bohannon at 11.0 PPG. Wisconsin comes into the game sixth in the Big Ten shooting 45% from the field (although Wisconsin has shot over 50% during their three game winning streak) while the Buckeyes lead the Big Ten at 47.9%. For the Buckeyes, Evan Turner comes in averaging 17 points per game, William Buford 11.8 PPG, and Jon Diebler 11.0 PGG. Over his last three games, Turner is averaging 24.3 points and 10.6 rebounds.Keys to the game:Wisconsin:1. Force the Buckeyes to beat them from the perimeter: with Mullens showing a lot of improvement down low, the Badgers will force the Buckeyes to put up shots late on the shot clock.2. Crash the boards: Ohio State is second to last in the Big Ten in offensive rebounding, so continue to try and limit the Buckeyes’ second chances.3. Feed the ball to 6’10” Jon Leuer. The forward got the starting nod three games ago and has responded with two 10+ scoring games. The Buckeyes are weaker on low post defense than most Big Ten teams and Wisconsin should look to exploit thatOhio State:1. Shoot well: The Buckeyes thrive off ball fakes and passing to get open shots and if they can get the Badgers playing defense on their heels the Buckeyes will win the game.2. Own the paint: Offensively and defensively the Buckeyes need to control down low to not only get open perimeter shots to limit the Badgers effectiveness on offense.3. Rebound, rebound, rebound: In the Buckeyes’ losses this year, they’ve rebounded poorly and a lot of second chances for the Badgers will spell doom for Ohio State.Prediction: I think the Buckeyes will earn their first win in Madison against Bo Ryan with a hard fought 61-57 victory.
