While many people are getting excited about the impact freshman wide receivers Jake Stoneburner and DeVier Posey may have on the field, a name that rarely gets mentioned as having a big impact, in 2008, is Lamaar Thomas. The Friendly, Maryland athlete will be making the full time switch from a high school running back to a college wide receiver for OSU. If Jim Tressel gets creative, Thomas could be an extremely dangerous weapon for the next years to come.

Many have tried to compare Thomas, who checks in at about 5′11″ and 175 lbs., to Ted Ginn Jr., but he resembles more of a Percy Harvin type of player to me. Harvin, who also stands at 5′11″ and weighs 178 lbs., is the stud athlete from the University of Florida who, if Buckeye fans remember correctly, had 5 carries for 22 yards and a touch down to go along with 9 receptions for 60 yards as a FRESHMAN in the BCS National Championship Game in Glendale two years ago. In Urban Meyer’s spread offense, Harvin’s athleticism is maximized as a receiver in slant plays, bubble screens, end arounds, and even specially designed plays where Percy lines up in the backfield. With Thomas’ speed (10.3 sec. in the 100 yard dash) and athleticism, there is no reason why he can’t have a similiar impact at Ohio State. Jim Tressel may have brought in his best class since 2002 and needs to maximize the results out of his newest players. This may require Tressel and Jim Bollman to be a little more “unconventional”. Now that we have the athletes that we have “lacked” for the past two seasons as National Runners-Up, maybe it’s time to use our full arsenal of weapons.
