In a surprise turn of events, Indian Head (Lackey), Maryland, corner back Darrell Givens has switched his verbal commitment from Ohio State to the Penn State Nittany Lions, after attending the NIKE Camp in State College, Pennsylvania earlier today.
Givens, who committed to the Buckeyes after the April 19 Spring Game, decided to play for Joe Pa in Happy Valley, citing a chance to play earlier as his reason for the switch. Another factor that may have been an influence on his decision was that Lackey QB/S Malcolm Willis committed to the Nittany Lions recently. Givens also closed the book on his commitment, as Penn State will be his final choice.
The impact this has on the Buckeyes is that it hurts to lose a player of Givens’ caliber, but it gives the staff the opportunity to offer another player in the secondary such as EJ Banks from Montour, PA or Glenville’s Mike Edwards. Some Buckeye fans feel it’s not worth taking Givens because he is scared of the competition in the very talented secondary at OSU, and while I agree, I also feel this is a big hit to the program, but not one that cannot be salvaged (Vlad Emilien and Brandon McGee). DTI wants your opinion on Givens’ switch from a very strong OSU program to a unstable PSU program.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackCollege football is a business these days and especially recruiting.
As much as I would love to see him playing for the killer nuts, this is also a business decision for him and his future.
He wants to play early and he wouldn’t of at tOSU. He will at PSU.
Cant have players at OSU who are afraid of competition. This also says something about the state of PSU football if the only thing they can sell to big time recruits is where are less talented then the good programs in the Big 10. After they turned the top CB in the country in Justin King to a 4th round draft pick that would of been one of the last places I would of went too.
Justin King?
AJ Wallace?
Who?
Mike Edwards is strictly an emergency offer right now. Emilien and McGee would have to turn down Ohio State in order for Edwards to get an offer.
I dont think Mike Edwards is an emergency offer, in a normal year of recruting not one like this where it seems we are picking who we feel like I think he would already have an offer. If he comes to camp and shows well I would not be suprsied if they offer him at all.
I agree Blake…Edwards could end up with a similar situation to Jermil Martin where they will offer as long as he continues to perform well and there is room for him in the class….Coach Tressel wants to keep the Glenville Pipeline going strong and Hall, Newsome, and Edwards would be a nice trio next year….If we can get McGee, Emilien, and some other new guys with offers like Stephon Gillmore Edwards may not have a place in this class
I’m not saying he’s not a quality player, just that he’s a contingency plan at the moment. Like I said, the staff would probably have to feel that they are losing Emilien and McGee in order for Edwards to get an offer.
That said, the Good Lord blessed us with another commitment to bring the tally back to 14. Hoo-ray James Jackson. Hoo-ray beer!
beat me to the punch Vico can anyone say SPEEED
heh, I would have to see that 4.31 40 time he has listed on Rivals done again (gotta see it to believe it, because that time is ridiculous), but no one can doubt that James Jackson can flat out fly. I love the offer and I love the commitment. If Alabama felt the need to offer him, then he must be fast enough
.
If we can secure Duron Carter (keeping my fingers crossed), we would have one hell of a haul at wideout in 2009.
What about Marlon Brown??
(Im not holding my breath though)
