Here are the DTI Projections of where we see all the Big-Ten bowl eligible teams ending up, who their opponent will be, and what the result of those games will be.
Penn State (11-1)
Bowl: Rose Bowl Opponent: Oregon State Result: PSU wins 35-20
Analysis: While it won’t be the same rout from earlier in the year, the Nittany Lions will handle the Beavers once again with a 15-point victory. The Beavers still have Oregon in a rivalry game on Saturday, and a loss would bump USC up into this game.
Ohio State (10-2)
Bowl: Capital One Bowl Opponent: Georgia Result: OSU wins 27-21
Analysis: The Buckeyes get the monkey off their shoulder, and raise their record to 1-9 against the SEC in bowl games. Knowshon Moreno and the Bulldogs will give OSU a tough battle, but the next 5-6 weeks of rest means a healthy Beanie Wells.
Michigan State (9-3)
Bowl: Outback Bowl Opponent: LSU Result: LSU wins 27-17
Analysis: This game will be the battle of teams with QB trouble, but in the end I see the Tigers defense shutting down Javon Ringer for most of the game and coming out on top. Les Miles will pull out all the stops and the LSU running attack will put points on the board.
Northwestern (9-3)
Bowl: Alamo Bowl Opponent: Nebraska Result: Nebraska wins 14-10
Analysis: In this defensive battle, Nebraska will edge out the Wildcats. I feel that Northwestern is overachieving a little this year, while their defense is legitimately good. Their true colors will show in this game, and Bo Pellini gets a big win in turning around the Corn huskers program.
Iowa (8-4)
Bowl: Champs Sports Bowl Opponent: Virginia Tech Result: Iowa wins 24-21
Analysis: The Hawkeyes have been a pleasant surprise this season, with RB Shonn Greene becoming one of the nation’s best at his position. Iowa is for real and Kirk Ferentz saves his job and caps off the season with a big win over the Hokies.
Minnesota (7-5)
Bowl: Insight Bowl Opponent: Kansas Result: Kansas wins 38-21
Analysis: The Gophers are another team that overachieved this year, and Kansas had a disappointing run after an Orange Bowl appearance last season. Todd Reesing and the Jayhawks will take care of the Gophers handedly in Arizona.
Wisconsin (7-5)
Bowl: Motor City Bowl Opponent: Ball State Result: Wisconsin wins 24-20
Analysis: The Badgers are better than they have played all year and their best game may have been against OSU on October 4 in Madison. That same game took the spirit out of Bucky’s season and Brett Bielema’s squad has not been the same since. Ball State will try to prove to the nation that they deserved to be in a BCS bowl, and Ohio product Nate Davis will face his toughest defense of the season. Wisconsin’s defense and running game makes the difference in this one as the Badgers squeak one out.
Summary: The Big Ten will send seven teams to bowl games this year with a final record of 4-3 in those games. Big wins come from OSU against an SEC opponent and PSU with a Rose Bowl victory, but Iowa beating Virginia Tech will be the best game and prove the Hawkeyes to be a force to be reckoned with in the conference next year.
With Oregon being the Bucks’ only shot to make the Sugar or Fiesta Bowl, wear your green and yellow and root hard for the Ducks.
